About us
The Roanoke River Lighthouse and Maritime Museum serves a two-fold purpose: To collect, preserve, interpret and present the maritime history of the Roanoke River and Albemarle Sound, and serve as a gathering place for public and private events.
The museum campus consists of three structures and a public park covering about one acre: the museum and public events building at 206 West Water Street; the replica 1867 Roanoke River Lighthouse in Water Street Landing Park across the street from the museum; and a storage warehouse across the alley from the museum.
Water Street Landing Park, which overlooks the Roanoke River, has been designated a Network to Freedom National Underground Railroad site by the National Park Service.

The Roanoke River Light Station
Judy Clifton Wright holds a portrait of her great-grandfather, Thomas Clifton Jr, assistant keeper of the Roanoke River Lightship in 1835 and first keeper of the Roanoke River Lighthouse in 1867. The portrait on the wooden chest is her grandfather, William Benjamin Clifton, who succeeded his father as lighthouse keeper in 1899.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, waterways such as the Roanoke River were America’s highways, and beacons such as the Roanoke River Lighthouse were the traffic signals.
The Dismal Swamp Canal and The Roanoke River Lightship
With the opening of the Dismal Swamp Canal, maritime traffic on the Roanoke increased so much that the U.S. Congress appropriated $10,000—about $342,000 in 2023 dollars—for a lightship, or floating lighthouse, to be anchored in the Albemarle Sound at the mouth of the Roanoke River. The Roanoke River Lightship was built in Elizabeth City and went on station in 1835.
